Combination of things – some spam these days is actually done by humans who are being paid to do so as an actual job, other spam is now done by bots that are based on browser-automation technology so it’s very difficult to distinguish them from actual users, and wordpress as a platform is one of the most targeted for this sort of thing. We’ve been having a little trouble with private message spam recently. I’ve been able to delete it fairly quickly, but unfortunately not before notifications of new messages go out. Working on a better way to stop it long-term.

May be out of touch for a little bit. Starting a new position with my company, and right now things are kind of crazy. Lots of long hours ahead. In the long run it’s a good move for me, but the transition is going to be rough until we can get some new systems and strategies in place.

Just for the record, if you send me a private message asking for permission to post an invitation to your research project on the site and I don’t reply to it one way or the other, that’s not blanket permission to start contacting users via PM to recruit them for the project.

They are well-intentioned, but very young. They might benefit from more contact with older kin, but I’m not sure the older kin would get much out of it themselves.

We just switched over to PHP7 and MariaDB. I think folks will notice the site is loading in about half the time (on average) so that’s a good thing. We did have to sacrifice one plugin – the one that let folks report users/content for moderation. It was completely breaking the site. D’oh. I was just looking for that feature yesterday (https://www.otherkin.net/2017/12/sdgdgsdgddgsdgssdgsdg/ looked to me like junk, although I suppose it’s possible it was that person testing how to do something). I was really confused when I couldn’t find where to click to report.

Nobody made it, actually – it’s automatically generated by the “MonsterID” library, and folks are free to replace it with any image they like (within reason). It’s mostly there to give us something more individualized as the default icon, in case folks don’t get around to uploading one of their own, so we can still tell them apart at a glance.

I gotta agree with them, though, that whoever actually designed the icons that go in that library, I mean, ugh. Changing the default icon was the very first thing I did too (and I think the first/only status update I’ve ever posted here is to say “AUGH WHAT IS THAT”, heh).
